Sewing Spandex on a Vintage Singer Sewing Machine

I had a question from one of my visitors about sewing spandex on a vintage sewing machine.

I have been trying to sew some bike shorts on an old 60's singer and am having a hard time getting the zigzag stitches to hold...is there something I can do or is my machine too old?

Thanks, Angela

Dealing with spandex fabric can be a challenge, here is my best advice for your question.

If you have a zigzag stitch option on your machine you should be able to sew spandex fabric. It sounds like from your question, the tension could be a problem. Or the type of sewing needle you are using can also cause irregular stitches. A sewing machine needle that is strictly for stretch fabric is what should be used with 100% polyester thread.

I have a page dedicated to sewing spandex fabric. You will find information for the type of thread and needles etc. for the best sewing experience.

What I would suggest is getting your hands on the owners manual if you don't have one. As well, take the machine to have it serviced. A clean machine will make your sewing life much easier.

If it hasn't been serviced in quite some time, your sewing machine is not unlike your car, the parts need to be cared for. This will cost a few dollars, but it will be well worth your time and money.

Happy Sewing
