Pattern sizes
by: Ali

Patterns def run smaller thes days! I buy dresses, skirts, pants in size 8-10. I have recently sewn a dress & had to cut the size 14 which wasn't any too big at all, except too long waisted.... Same thing about 5 yrs ago sewed a 2 pc blazer/ skirt set.... Cut out size 14... Had to let out ses/darts.... Finally after wearing twice gave it away!

Typically, sewing pattern sizes are not comparable to retail ready to wear clothing sizes. I wear a size 2 in RTW and I sew a size 12 in sewing patterns.

I do think that the sewing pattern sizes are changing though. I used to sew a size 10 for many years. Although our shape changes with age, I am still the same measurements as I was 20 years ago.

What I think we can learn from this is 1)reading the pattern envelope before buying is very important, and 2) when we do purchase a sewing pattern, we need to take the time to make sure the pattern we cut is the right size before cutting the fabric. Having a dress form is most helpful while doing this, but this can also be done by finding a well fitting garment in your closet, and turning it inside out, then comparing the pattern pieces to the garment.
