Sewing Your Baby Minnie Mouse Costume

The Skirt:

With right sides of fabric together, begin sew your two pieces of red polka dot fabric together for the skirt. These seams will be your skirt side seams. Set aside.

The Shoulder Straps:

Fold your shoulder strap fabric right sides together and in half. Stitch a 1/4" seam. Turn the fabric to the right side and press the seam flat and to the back so it doesn't show. You should have a tube. Set aside.

The Waist Band:

Fold the ends of your waist band fabric 1/2" on both ends. So your 24" will now be 23". Then fold your fabric length wise with wrong sides together.  Press flat and set aside.

The Bib:

With right sides of fabric together, carefully stitch 3/8" around the bib circles. Leaving the very bottom open so you can turn the fabric to the right side. Before you turn the bib to the right side, you will have to carefully make small notches around the circles so the will lay flat.

Once you have turned your bib to the right side, press flat.

*(If you're unsure what this means, or need more help with this, I have added a good tutorial from youtube).

Putting it all together:

Now, go back to your 2 sewn pieces that make the skirt. You are now going to gather. Again, if you are unsure about gathering here is a youtube video that may be helpful.

Pull your gathers so they are the same width as your waist band. 23" wide.

With right sides together, you will now pin your bib in the center of the front of the skirt, over the gathers. Make sure your raw edges are even.

*(I appologized for the lack of photos. I created the Minnie Mouse costume previous to creating this tutorial.)

Now place your waist band over the bib and again, make sure your raw edges are even. The bib will now be sandwiched between the skirt and the waist band. With raw edges even stitch the 3 layers together with a 3/8" seam.

Now that the skirt is all together, you will need to put the elastic inside the waist band.

Measure the elastic length that you need. This will be the circumfrence of the childs waist. With a safety pin attached to the elastic, feed the elastic through the opening in the waist band. Once the elastic is all the way in. Secure the ends of the elastic by sewing the ends together by machine.

The next step is the straps. You can hand sew the straps in. I used buttons and snaps. It saved from having to make button holes.
