Help With Sewing Spandex Fabric

I have been dabbling in various sewing projects for years and I am rather frustrated at my lack of progress...

I have a dashing yoga top which is a little big so I decided to take it in... My problem is that my machine keeps skipping stitches? I have put in a new stretch needle and am using some German polyester thread. (I have no problem stitching cotton - and have never encountered this problem before?)

I live in Tanzania - help, and resources are limited (with regards to this particular issue!)

Would really appreciate hearing from you.

Regards,

Mandy

Sewing with specialty fabrics can prove to be a challenge. It sounds like you are doing the right things, ie: needle and thread. If you have sewn with stretch knits before with no problem, then try playing with the thread tension dial.

You can also explore other stitches available on your machine (not sure what your sewing machine make and model is, but you may have a stretch stitch built in.)

If not try a very small zig-zag stitch, on a scrap of stretch knit fabric, and see if this helps.

Sewing with stretch knits is wonderful if you have the right tools in every way. Perhaps in the future, you may want to invest in a serger, this is a wonderful machine for sewing stretch fabrics. You will want to sew more than you do now if you have one at your fingertips.

My other suggestion is to have your machine serviced if you haven't done so in a while. If your resources are limited, and a sewing machine repair shop isn't close by, go to Youtube.com. I love Youtube for self-help videos, there are thousands of people willing and able to help.

I hope that this helps, please don't hesitate to contact me if you need more help.

Good luck and happy sewing.
Monica
