Definition of a Blouse

What is a blouse  and what is the difference between a blouse and a shirt? This garment has changed from it's origin. Wikipedia explains it like this; A blouse is a loose-fitting upper garment that was formerly worn by workmen, peasants, artists, women and children. It is typically gathered at the waist (by a waistband or belt) so that it hangs loosely ("blouses") over the wearer's body. Today, the word most commonly refers to a woman's shirt but can also refer to a man's shirt if it is a loose-fitting style (e.g. poet shirts and Cossack shirts). Traditionally, the term has been used to refer to a shirt which blouses out or has an unmistakably feminine appearance.

Blouse Patterns
Choosing a sewing pattern

No matter what your level as a sewer is, there is a pattern for you.

  • Tip: If you are a beginner, choose patterns that don't have too many style details. Zippers, buttons, or complex design details, tend to frustrate a beginner seamstress.

Unless you feel up for the challenge and you are willing to take it slow and steady, then avoid these features in your pattern, at least until your skills have increased.

Once you have made a blouse or two you will see how great it is to be able to add to your wardrobe without paying high prices for the wardrobe essentials you need and want.

Here are some examples of patterns that could be suitable for you. Click the images to go to the pattern websites.

 Fabric Suggestions

Often you can turn a very simple style into a dressy stunning wardrobe essential, just by using rich colored silk or satin fabric.

Choosing the right fabrics for the style of pattern is listed on the back of the pattern. Follow the suggested fabrics the pattern suggests for a good guide line.

Satin Fabric

Satin fabric is typically a dressier choice in fabric, but it's a great choice for dressing up a suit for the work place, especially if you know that you will be going into an evening event or out for dinner when your work day is done. Satin comes in many colour choices and isn't that expensive if you choose a high quaility polyester over a silk satin fabric.

Silk Fabric

Silk is very luxurious. I will cost a bit more but in the end you will have a beautiful blouse you can wear from the day into the evening. A simple style blouse can look much more stunning made with silk fabric.

Cotton Fabric

Cotton shirting is option for a casual looking garment typically worn  with your suit or slacks for a clean crisp look.

Chiffon Fabric

Different Types of Chiffon Fabric

 Silk Chiffon

Silk Chiffon is lighter and less rigid than the polyester option. Silk has a more luxurious hand (feel) and of course the price tag is going to match. If you want to splurge on the silk version you will not be disappointed.

 Polyester Chiffon

Polyester Chiffon fabric will cost you less and is a good choice for your sewing projects. I often say natural fiber fabrics are best, however, man made fabrics are affordable and they have come a long way in matching the feel of natural silk chiffon.  It's best to choose a lesser price point fabric when you are learning to sew. Polyester chiffon comes in a wider bolt which also means you will need less when you purchase for your sewing project
